5 out of 5 stars Perfect fit   November 2, 2008
This was highly recommended by my daughter's music teacher and has served her well. Plus it is so compact that it fits in her viola case so she is never without it. A perfect fit.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for violin musicians   September 29, 2008
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

I picked one of these up recently to help me tune my violin. Before I had this, I was using a built in Pitch Pipe that was connected at the end of the tail-piece.

I thought that using the pitch pipe, and then tuning the rest of the strings should be sufficiently accurate. I now realize that I was wrong and that it was negatively effecting my studies.

The CA-30 has 3 LED Lights and a Gray LED Screen. The LED Screen will give you details on how many cents the note is off, and it will also display what note it thinks you're trying to play. For example, If I play an "A" on my violin but it's too sharp, the dial on the screen will tilt to the right, and point to a cent value.

The CA-30 seems smart enough to detect any note you play for it. So it's really helpful for me because I'll have it turned on the whole time that I'm practicing. The CA-30 provides instant feedback on whether my playing style is sloppy or not via the 3 LED Lights at the top. The LED Lights illuminate depending on how in(or out) of tune the note you are playing is. If your note is dead on (or within +/- 20 cents) the green center LED will stay lit. If it's way off, the green light will turn off and either a RED sharp light or a RED flat light will illuminate. I'm trying to play all of my finger exercises pitch perfect. It's hard, +/- 20 cents isn't very noticeable unless you're really paying attention.

As a novice and a student the CA-30 has really improved my playing. I wasn't expecting such a cheap investment to have such a positive effect on my playing style.

I did some experiments on the CA-30, to test to see just how accurate it was. I have a few Basic Waveform VST synth instruments that I can trigger via MIDI from my step sequencer. I put the CA-30 by the speakers and created a single sine-wave for the note C D E F ...etc. The Korg CA-30 correctly registered them all as "Dead On" perfect notes.

After I did that, I played the pitch pipe on my violin (An "A"). The Korg CA-30 detected that it was about +20 centimes to sharp. Once I got everything tuned, I realized that my first position finger tapes were no longer accurate. I had been playing out of tune but I think I was compensating for the bad notes without realizing it.

The Korg CA-30 now sits on my music stand while I'm playing. If my finger positions get sloppy the Korg CA-30 is going to no longer give me a green light for whatever note I'm trying to play. It's like having someone giving you feedback so you can avoid getting into an unbreakable bad habit with finger positions. While it's not a useful indicator with fast pieces. It still provides feedback on most of my quarter notes.
