4 out of 5 stars Great Scanner for the Money   December 4, 2008
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

I just received delivery from Amazon today (an amazing two days after I placed the Order). I loaded in the software and hooked up the scanner in about ten minutes and was already scanning. That scanner itself works as advertised. I scanned negatives that are about 15 years old. I bought the scanner primarily to preserve my dad's old 35MM slides and load them onto a digital picture frame. The 4400F is up to that task. Scanning four pictures from the negatives at the highest resolution took about 7 minutes (which I thought was a bit long). I downgraded to "Standard" and it cut the scan time to about 3.5 minutes for four pictures. The quality at standard is noticeably inferior to the top resolution, but i have about 1500 slides to scan before christmas and in the 800x600 resolution picture frame, I don't think it will make much difference. I plan to go back and rescan a good chunk of them and photo shop them over time when I am in less of a rush. Speaking of software, the software bundle is effective and easy to use, particular if you just want to do the basics (remove scratches, dust, shading etc).

I am sure there are much better, faster and higher quality machines on the market, but for $90 shipped, this is better than I expected. I do have to strike one star though because Canon provides a flimsy white cardboard cover to place over the slide and negative holder and backlight when doing ordinary scans. They could at least sprung for plastic. This contruction makes me question the long term build quality, but I guess they need to give you a reason to step up to the 8800F (which has very similar specs, but a few software improvements). If you're a prosumer or professional photographer, it's probably worth it to step up to the 8800F or go for Mustek, Minolta or higher end scanner. For most people out there that just want to convert 35MM negatives and slides to digital, this will more than suit your needs.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Deal   December 2, 2008
This was a recent purchase for a boyfriend whose family has tons of slides they wanted to convert. It has been a simple process for them.

5 out of 5 stars A great buy...   November 29, 2008

This product is justifiably regarded as a best buy by Consumer Reports. As always, I found all of their observations and assessments to be correct. I bought this scanner to digitize a few thousand of my father's 35mm slides, many of them over 50 years old. The results exceeded my expectations. At four slides per scan, it took a few days, but I think I've already gotten my $90 worth. I opted for the free super saver shipping, was disappointed at the forecasted 14-day delivery date, but then pleasantly surprised when it came 5 working days later.

5 out of 5 stars Canon 4400F Scanner Review   November 29, 2008

The quality of the scan is excellent. The process is more complex than the HP scanner it replaced but the quality of the scan is worth is. Great value. Highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Mediocre scanner   November 25, 2008

This product is a good first scanner for a hobbyist who wants to begin scanning images into various projects. I can only give it three stars, however, because the attachment that permits scanning slides and negatives, which is of considerable importance to me, is poorly designed. This was my second scanner. The first was a second generation model from another manufacturer and it performed the slide/negative scanning in a far superior manner. There is a great price difference between the two products so perhaps I should have heeded the advice of other reviewers and opted for the more expensive model. If slide/negative scanning is not important to you, then I can say that the machine functions well and will prove to be a good value.
