OutletPCDecember 29, 2008 The Sabrent USB-DSC5 adapter is very useful if you have a drive that you want to test and you do not want to have to open your computer. This one of the best devices that will work for checking all kinds of drives that use Serial ATA or IDE connections. The documentation is lacking some information on how to use this device.
Could use some workDecember 29, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Pros: Well, my computers (Vista and XP) both instantly recognized it and installed it. No disk or hassles required. It treated the drive just like any other external hard drive. I don't have to fiddle with or break open the case on my computers to test or use spare drives. I liked that there were lights that showed when a drive was actually connected and working so you didn't have to guess.
Cons: Don't take this the wrong way. This is a geek's product and you'd expect the items that included to be used by Geeks, but the power connector for the PATA drive has loose pins. You have to fiddle with it some to get the power cable to go in. There were little sparks whenever I connected or disconnected a drive. Not cool. I'd like to see a safer on/off switch say somewhere on the Transformer. Suffice it to say, I'd plug the 110 into the wall last to keep the sparks as far away as possible. Drive will spin-up no matter if the USB is connected or not. So, plug power into drive, plug power adapter into wall, then SATA cable to adapter, and finally USB into computer. A longer SATA cable would also have been nice. The one that came with the kit was NOT the one in the picture. I got one about 2-3", not the 6-8" that it looks like from the picture. One final beef is that the USB cable could have been longer so that I could set the drive on the desk instead of on the ground by the computer case. All that said, the product works fine as described and I'd still have bought it over some of the other products out there.
Does exactly what it saysDecember 29, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I had some old IDE drives laying around and wanted to get data off them without requiring a case with drive bays. This did the job. It's not meant to be a premanent connection to replace a hard drive enclosure so don't buy it expecting that.
amazing asset.December 20, 2008 great product for a great price, especially is you have a lot of old hard drives or ipod hard drives lying around.
Easy way to recover data from old hard drivesDecember 17, 2008 I recently purchased this cable to recover data off of some old hard drives and did not want to have to install the drives in my desktop. The cable makes getting this data simple, literally plug and play. This would also make it quite easy to recover data using a laptop where installation of the drive is not an option. I had no problems with it and was in business within a minute or so of opening this box. I feel certain this cable will come in handy again and was worth the price to me. I am by no means a computer expert and found this item user friendly.
