Do not buy if you live in CanadaDecember 4, 2008 0 out of 13 found this review helpful
A girlfriend of mine had this item shipped to a friend in the States, brought it back to Canada, and then realized she couldn't download any books unless she could pay with a US credit card. (Oddly enough, they were able to detect that her credit card came from Canada)
So, she sadly had to ship it back to the States, and then her friend had to ship it back to Amazon.
I'm not sure what the logistics are or why you're not able to use this item in Canada, but Amazon is just shooting themselves in the foot by limiting their customers to just the US.
Doesn't make a whole lot of sense, does it?
Love my KindleDecember 4, 2008 I truly love my Kindle. It is so easy to use. I get so engrossed in reading that I hate to put it down. One of its best features is the dictionary. The Kindle is just great for travelling.
Love it!...but...December 4, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is the kind of thing I've been waiting for in terms of reading convenience and quick delivery of content. I waited until there were enough titles that I wanted, and even though the recent price drop was small, it was probably what finally made me cave and spend the $$. Also love it because I've run out of bookshelf space in my apartment, even having already pared down as much as I could. It doesn't compare to an actual book but it really doesn't need to, it really has it's own place for people who love to read and already read in all sort of formats. I've tried reading in bed with my laptop, or using reading apps on the itouch but this device is light years better - just the right size, heft and brightness. However, I gotta say... it's ugly. It's hide-it-from-people ugly. Giant 70's calculators looked better. Compared to my other electronics (mac, ps3, itouch, blkberry, etc.) it's absolutely awful to look at. I can't help but love it though - it if wasn't so fugly, it'd be perfect.
Kindle: Wonderful Electronic BookDecember 4, 2008 I purchased a unit for my wife and one for myself after seeing and getting a discount through the Oprah Winfrey show. I absolutely love mine. The best feature for me (at age 67 and a contact wearer) is the ability to increase the font size which is especially important in dimmer light situations such as in bed. The ease of using a reading light and hitting an advance button and NOT turning pages is also very convenient. One aspect I don't like is the leather cover which is necessary to attach the reading light. It does not want to contain the Kindle very securely. I prefer holding the Kindle without it.
I'm in love...my husband will be jealousDecember 4, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
There was a knock at the door about three hours ago...it was UPS. My Kindle had finally arrived! I oh so carefully opened the box to find a very well packaged box! Not just any box...a Kindle box! Beautiful and interesting box designed like a book. I removed the plastic and took a little sniff...mmm electronic smell! LOL. Ok, so it wasn't the same as a new book, but all of a sudden I had an entire book store in my hands. All the books I had held off buying, knowing I would be getting my Kindle, I could now order...oh Heaven! As I pulled everything out I had to keep myself in check and remember to charge it first, although it turned on just fine out of the box, so I set it in the cover and plugged it in...after a couple minutes of checking it out. I was already excited. I took the little "get to know your Kindle" book and settled on the couch to read it over. Now, I have already spent months watching the Kindle and wanting one, so I have read everything on the web site and hundreds of reviews, discussions, and helpful hints. I really wanted to get my hands on it and play...Woo Hoo! The light went out! I turned on the Whispernet...full bars here...and download the sample of every book I had been waiting to buy, and spent several minutes reading the welcome letter and the guide. Now I can see why people complain about the cover, and the buttons, and the slow, cumbersome format...but so what? It does all the things it promises and it's wonderful! I will buy him (yes, him) a new cover from Oberon, and I have already adjusted to holding him without hitting the buttons (with the heads up that it could be a problem as well as lots of suggestions on how to avoid it). Now I can get whatever book I feel like reading. I can stop and start again by puttng him to sleep at any time so when my 1 yr old son needs me I don't lose my place. I love to read, I love books, but now I have a new love. The screen is amazingly easy to read from, the changeable font is wonderful and easy to use, the ease of shopping is a delight! Sigh...I suppose I will have to put down so I can make dinner...nah, they can fend for themselves tonight! THANK YOU AMAZON!
