Buy a different brandNovember 28, 2008 Like others report, encountered problems almost right away with DVD--would not recognize various types and brands tried. Result: unable to record any programs onto DVD or copy tapes to DVD--simply a VCR with a digital tuner. After a year, now adding problems with TV sound missing after setting up VCR to record a program; then add sometime loses all video/audio from tuner (will play a tape, but can't record because can't bring up menu. Originally had high hopes and purchased 2 at the same time; both had the same non-functioning DVD problems.
Not a good choiceAugust 9, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Our unit has had three problems, the third and worst of which occurred 15 months after purchase or 3 months after the manufacturer's warranty expired. (Fortunately we bought an extended warranty.) The initial problem was it picked up noise from any other electronics running while the DVD was recording (i.e., couldn't run the DVD player and the TV while the DVD recorder was recording a live program). This showed up like "rain" in the recordings. We got around that by locating it several feet from the other entertainment equipment which defeats the purpose of having an entertainment cabinet. The second problem was that when you separated your recording into different "titles" they would often not play correctly on a regular DVD player. We got around that by not separating titles. Inconvenient and not fully functional, but doable. The third problem, which showed up 15 months after purchase, was it started goofing up both DVD recordings and finalizing minor edits to recorded DVDs. It developed a mind of its own. We thought we had a bad box of DVD+RWs but a different manufacturer's DVD+RWs didn't do any better. Sometimes it would remove all the chapter tabs when finalizing; sometimes it would corrupt the recording right at the chapter tabs; sometimes it would not allow editing at all; it would think it had eight minutes to finalize something and be off in la-la land for an hour after that; sometimes it would record about a minute or so all on its own and then not be able to use the whole recording time we had programmed. We have taken it in for "service evaluation" on extended warranty but will be delighted if we are allowed to replace it with something that works much better.
Lock-up or crash problemsFebruary 19, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
The recorder I bought has "locked up" or "crashed" three times, where the only way to make it function is to unplug the recorder. The LG help line says another way to unlock the box is to press and hold the stop button, so the company is apparently aware of this problem, most likely because other people have also had this problem. It takes about 5 minutes to program the VCR part or longer if the time setting was lost, and about 15 to program the DVD plus 5 to format a disk. My recommendation is to call the help desk and get a return shipping label the moment your deck crashes (within a couple weeks from date of purchase) because it will cost $70 labor if you miss the 90-day warranty window. When "crashed", you will have hours of empty playback on blank tape, or be unable to finalize DVD recordings (same result).
DON"T BUYJanuary 9, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Within a few weeks of using this it is failing. Can't recognize disks, doesn't record properly, freezes up. Most of the time I have to unplug the machine to reset it. Don't waste your money on this one, it's nothing but problems.
Better get an extended warranty!December 17, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Our unit worked fine at first. But after only a few months we began having tracking problems with the VHS recorder/player. I always double checked the suspect video tapes in another VCR and they played fine there. If I made a VHS tape in the LG unit, the tracking problems would show up in other players, as well. It was definitely a problem with the LG unit. Since we didn't use the VHS component very much we just relied on the DVD player/recorder. After a little over 1 year of use, we started having problems with the DVD unit, also. Commercially produced movie DVDs would suddenly freeze in the player and I could not get it to respond to any controls but a complete power-off. I checked the same movie DVDs in another brand of DVD player and they always played perfectly. This problem became more frequent until the unit just locked up so badly after simply turning it on that I had to pull the power plug to get it to stop. It would not respond to ANY commands from either the remote or from the buttons on the front panel. I can only say that I'm glad we got an extended warranty on this one. I have a feeling I'll be using it a lot. I don't think I'll be buying another LG product any time soon.
