The AV480 has an 80 GB hard drive, which can record up to 320 hours of video content from a TV, VCR, or cable/satellite receiver using the TV cradle. It plays MP3 and WMA digital audio files (included protected files) as well as WAV audio.
Once the TV Cradle is connected to a TV, VCR or cable/satellite receiver, you won't have to reconnect the cables again--just dock the AV400 and you're ready. The Recording Scheduler directly controls the tuner inside your VCR or cable/satellite receiver to automatically adjust the channel and record based on the time and duration of the schedule. The Scheduler will also synchronize with Yahoo TV Guide (where available) from the Internet so you can prepare your recordings for the week or month in advance.

THIS COMPANY SUCKS HARDSeptember 30, 2008 mine started having probs within the warranty(like 2 months or so). i called for a rma and the dude said it was on the way. a month or 2 went by and i got nothing. the warranty was up now. when i called they denied that i ever even called. they wouldnt help me at all. the machine didnt work at all at this point. they basically were calling me a liar. horrible pr. so i tried to fix it myself. took it apart. and found a stupid battery design. its a frickin bag battery??? i live in the mountains. and what happens to bags at high altitudes? they expand. this battery bag did just that. and broke the machine. i called the company the first time cuz i saw cracks on the outside and had never ever came close to dropping it. 700 bucks is not gonna be thrown around by me. so i called back and told them what i found and they still said i never called them before the warranty and this is BS. they would not budge even though it was a design flaw. thanx archos for stealing 700 dollars from me. ive heard other bad things about their return policy. HORRIBLE COMPANY!!!
Terrible Customer Service, and I don't even have it yet!February 28, 2008 I ordered this awhile ago and it took them 3 days just to send me the UPS tracking information. When I clicked on the link the UPS site had the following error: "UPS could not locate the shipment details for your request." So I waited a day to make sure it wasn't a case of the number not being entered into the UPS system. Next day it still didn't work.
I emailed Archos Customer Service and I still haven't gotten a response. I want my money back! This is unacceptable service.
If you can buy the product in a brick and mortar store, buy it, but avoid the Archos site at all cost for anything other than product information.
The AV400 is seriously flawed and ARCHOS service is horrendousOctober 4, 2007 I whole heartedly agree with other bad reviews: my AV400 was seriously flawed - from an engineering standpoint - from the day I bought it and it is still not repaired (and most likely not repairable). Bad battery!!?! The battery has started to expand destroying the whole unit. It doesn't even boot now. For the amount of money I spent I would hope that the unit would last at least a year. It didn't. I would never spend another dime on Archos gear having dealt with their horrendously bad customer and repair service - you can forget about an ARCHOS warranty completely! What use is the warranty if Archos makes it nearly impossible to get something repaired by them?

Don't buy this company's products....They SUCK!!!!! Pick from a more competent company to do business with. Unsuspecting buyers avoid this company at all costs because I have NEVER seen this level of incompetence with a company. It's the customers that allow them to exist ....but they seem to forget that most important concept.

If I had to do it over again I'd probably go with the 40G version just because of the problems others have had with the 80G. With that said though I've had no problems whatsoever. I've had mine about 8 months now. My main use is recording TV shows and then using the Archos on trips. The 2nd use would be as an MP3 player and I also use it as a portable hard drive.
If this product were released right now I'd probably have to give it 4 stars, but considering it's almost 2 years old now I see it worthy of being 5 stars. Archos is way ahead of the competition in this market.
Problems - All the problems I've had are very minor. 1.) The battery life is not great. It's good for about 2 hours of video. 2.) The screen is difficult to clean. Fingerprints wouldn't be such an issue if there was a case that had a clear cover so you could see the screen. 3.) My biggest problem is with the playlists for music files. It's not easy to use. I never did figure out how to add a song to a playlist without creating a new playlist. I ended up taking all my songs off and organizing them in folders and then putting them back on the Archos.
I won't list all the great things about Archos as I think they're pretty well known.
