Nice Unit for The PriceAugust 10, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is my first mp3 + unit and I am quite impressed with it. I use The Ubuntu flavor of linux and it connects with no problem. I can upload pictures and mp3's like a champ to the unit.
Pros:
Sleek and sexy. Wide Screen format.
Comes with a screen protector already on the unit. When you peel of the demo screen protector there is a clear screen protector underneath.
The built in FM Tuner is crystal clear with reception that picks up in my basement 12 feet underground.
Records FM.
Photos are crisp. No where is the resolution listed on the web site or in the documentation so I down-converted my photos in Picasa export to 320 pixels. This was a perfect fit and displayed brilliantly on the units screen with no distorion of size.
There is enough memory on this unit that I can upload high quality mp3's to give a better sound to the music.
Small enough to fit neatly in my front shirt pocket while hiking or walking.
The volume is incremental in 32 steps and can get quite loud.
Has a record function with a microphone built in.
There are pre-programmed eq settings and one slot open for personal setting.
The ear buds are decent -- they add a bit of color" on the high end. I purchased separately a set of JVC ear buds that did not sound as colorful - this is a personal preference.
The unit charged between 1 and 2 hours. I haven't played it long enough to say how long the battery lasts.
I haven tried any mtv/mp4s or any other movie formats to comment. I blind enough as it is and don need to squint at some small screen to watch a movie :)
Cons:
Cheap plastic case.
Small - I will most likely lose this between the couch cushions. If the clapper was built in that would be king.
No plug - must use the supplied usb cable to charge. A growing trend for manufacturers to sell accessories which really ticks me off. (My old motorola cell phone plug had the correct parameters and worked perfectly - glad I did not throw it away. -heh-) I do not recommend this as you might fry your unit if you do not know the polarity or voltage/watts of the plug.
The usb cable is 2.5 feet long. I Used my own cable so I could sit the unit on my desk and connect it to the computer under my desk.
The ear bud cable is very short coming in at 1 foot 4 inches and is meant to hold the unit around your neck to dangle in front of you. Clever design, but not functional if you workout and listen to mp3's unless you want to wear the unit around your neck all the time. You will need to buy more ear buds to put this in your pant pocket or in the bottom of a book bag.
No mention how to change out internal battery when it dies. (I Expect these type batteries to last 1-2 years or less depending on usage). I guess as we are a throw away planned obsolescence culture the unit will eventually end up in a landfill and I will buy another one. The Chinese have learned the art of capitalism well :)
The manual is written in Window-ese...not mentioning that the unit is compatible with other operating systems.
No major issues that I have encountered.
For those who may be using Ubuntu and speak/read english-- it took me a while to figure out why I was seeing Chinese characters displayed on the mp3 unit when it scrolled through the artist and song title.....
I thought the mp3 player was messed and would not set to the english language, but in actuality I had to convert my mp3 tags from unicode (UTF-8) to the Western characterset.
I first bought this as a birthday gift for my 10 year old. I re-thought that as she would most likely lose the unit or break it. (It that small and made with cheap plastic). Well, she got 2 Nintendo ds games and I got the mp3 player :)
