Customer Reviews:
Another customer service failureNovember 5, 2005 While customer service from consumer electronics manufacturers is always seeking new lows, MPIO would be hard pressed to be worse. I was an early buyer of the FY200, and while mine was advertised and sold as being usable as a USB drive, a note in the box said that feature wouldn't work until updating the firmware. No functional firmware update tool or files are available at MPIO's web site.
Player is OK, but software is a joke.October 24, 2005 This is my first mp3 player, but it won't be my last. In fact, after having owned this one for about 3 weeks, I'm already shopping for a replacement.
I bought this player at a large, national clothing retailer for $30, so I guess I can't really complain too loudly. However, some of the accessories the ad claimed came with the player were missing (the belt/wrist clip, the battery, and the USB adapter), yet it came with 2 sets of earphones. It did include the USB cable, though, so the missing items didn't render it unusable.
The software is terrible. The player has two sets of icons for "USB connected", indicating that the player is connected to your PC. One allows you to download files to the player, the other does not (and its purpose is still a mystery to me). Once I figured this out, I loaded the software and proceeded to attempt to download some music. None of the icons would respond. I closed and reopened the program repeatedly. Nothing. I tried running from the command line to no avail. I chose to reload, choosing the "repair" selection. Nothing doing. I then had to uninstall/reinstall, never quite sure if I was choosing the correct options, the prompts being somewhat cryptic, referring to my previously having selected to "lock" certain files, which is bogus -- I had simply put the CD into the ROM and installed the program. My computer had to be rebooted and crashed if I chose more than one file to download at one time (meaning I had to select one-by-one rather than multiply select the files I want to transfer to the player). I eventually did get some music downloaded to the player, but only after having repeated the above for each new playlist. And all of this was unspecified and unexplained by the utterly useless user's manual. (If you would like some real laughable instructions for recitation at your next cocktail party, this one's a hoot.) These are, literally, the worst set of user instructions I have ever read. And all of the above has to be dealt with each time I want to update my playlist, which is often because of its limited storage.
The player itself is not bad, except that it only stores 128 KB, so it's pretty antiquated. (This means about 30-40 standard pop songs.) The sound is good, except the low end could be richer. The high range is where it sounds the best and the headphones are a good, sturdy, and comfortable set. The player has quite a bit of functionality and is an FM tuner (and can record the signal), is a voice recorder, and can play various file formats, as well as change the output settings from the color of the display to the equalization of the sound. However, one button controls virtually 90% of the functions, so learning the various menus and sub-menus is trial and error. (Again, the user's manual is just dreadful.)
Am I expecting too much for only $30? Maybe. I still think any device such as this should 1) be packaged and sold as advertised; 2) include a useful manual written by those who are actually familiar with the language of the market in which they are selling; 3) include software that doesn't crash the user's computer. I'll probably get a Nano soon and give this one to...someone I don't particularly like.
waste of money - poor quality & difficultAugust 4, 2005 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
not only is it more complicated than necessary, you cannot delete the software program once it is installed. very little music storage availability
awsome player, little packageMarch 5, 2005 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
i've had this player for 9 months now and its worked great. of the 128mb players, this has to be one of the best. pros: -small design (fits in pocket and come with belt clip and arm band) -good battery life (ususally about 11hours, cold weather= less) -easy to navigate with one hand, without looking -capable of visualizations -very tough, have taken skiing, dirtbiking, and have dropped numerous times but still works perfectly -voice recorder and line in cable for direct encoding -different sound creators(bass, concert hall, funk, etc.) -5-band equalizer -changeable light color (orange, green) -very helpful cust. service -sleek design -better than ipod shuffle (has screen), same size -fm radio -works with realplayer cons: -doesn't come in 20gb format
this is an awsome player, i highly reccommend this to anyone looking for a good player for everything.
Good but little storageSeptember 21, 2004 I got this as a gift and its easy to use - good sounds and lots of functions - however the storage is very small. Can only hold about 20 songs before you run out of memory. I would spend the extra money to get one with higher memory capacity.
