One of the best universal players on the market!November 16, 2008 I never heard of Oppo until researching for a new universal player. I read reviews and felt satisfied to try one. I am blown away on how great this player is. I have a Marantz that was more than double the cost and it was a lemon from the start. It's getting harder to find good SACD players but Oppo came up with one. Can't wait to see if they come up with a Blu-ray Player at an affordable cost.
No need for Blu-Ray!November 11, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Have a HUGE collection of DVD's and starting all over with Blu-Ray is simply out of the question! Now with the 983, I have all the 1080P HD I need! THANK YOU OPPO! This is a Machine....period!
For us, SD DVD Collectors, there is no other DVD Player than OPPO DV-983HOctober 31, 2008 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I just had to add my happiness with the player, to this avalanche of praises. I will not be technical since all there is to know or find out, it is explained within these reviews. I got it, hooked it up to my LCD screen and watched in wonder, tons of DVDs. What an experience! What a machine! What joy! Yes it is pricey, but it is the best out there for up converting our SD DVD Collection. Thank you OPPO for making it available. I called already 10 friends and e-mailed them the link. So if you have an LCD screen, a collection of SD DVDs and are looking to have a GREAT experience watching them: GO FOR IT. No second taught. Not to mention one of my favorite features the USB connector. Amazing. Just get a large USB stick, drag your video clips of almost any format from your computer, plug it in to the USB slot and PLAY. It is truly a dream come true. The only problem is that now, it is very tempting to watch over and over the DVD collection, and we should not forget: There is LIFE outside our FILM WORLD.
Nobody does it better!!October 30, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
The day I received the player I had six friends invite themselves over for a preview. Connected to my Samsung 46" 650 series LCD the picture was jaw dropping. Everyone thought it was a Blue Ray player! This is the king of the up converters and for anyone who borrows, rents, or has an extensive collection this should be your first choice. Ninety eight percent of my favorite movies are on standard DVDs and most will probably never make it to Blue Ray. A beautiful piece of engineering!
Simply fantastic!October 22, 2008 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
Love this player! Output is fantastic, reads disks without a hitch that my other DVD players skip or hang on. Even the packaging is incredibly well done, in usual Oppo fashion. Their customer service is head and shoulders above other CE manufacturers - you can actually call or email them and get a clear answer to a question!
OK, enough gushing, but this is one fine player. Expensive, yes, but if you have a decent collection of SD DVDs, it is well worth the price.
I was torn between this and their other model (981). The output on the 983 is a wee bit better, but if you're not super picky, the lower cost model is a better value. What pushed me to the 983 was the fact that I have quite a few PAL disks, and the 983 does handle those better.
My only criticism of the player is the remote - buttons are too small, and poorly arranged. But, I'll be switching to a Harmony remote soon, so that point will be moot.
Very easy to switch this to be region-free - works just like the other Oppo models (just enter a few codes into the remote, and you're region free).

The 5.1 channel home-theater-in-a-box system features five tiny speakers - each about the size of a golf ball. The system, matched with a compact, single disc DVD/CD player/receiver, includes a unique subwoofer that helps the tiny speakers create sounds typically reserved for full size speakers.
