Amazon.com Product Description A be-all, end-all audio-video powerhouse, Denon's astonishingly affordable DVD-955S high-end DVD player plays and processes just about any media format out there, from the highest resolution audio formats (DVD-Audio, multichannel SACD) to the lowest, and most convenient (MP3 and Windows Media Audio, including WMA 9). The "everything in between" includes DVD-Video, recordable DVD (video-mode DVD-RW and DVD+R/+RW), and recordable CD configured for digital photo viewing (JPEG image CD, Kodak Picture CD, and Fujicolor CD).
Denon has built the DVD-955S with care, using high-grade parts and features at every turn. For its video stage, the player employs dual, discrete, Analog Devices ADV-7310 featuring 216 MHz, 4:4:4, 12-bit video digital-to-analog conversion with noise-shaped video processing and 1 chip each for progressive and interlaced outputs as well as 8x oversampling for progressive and 16x oversampling for the interlaced output.
The unit's progressive-scan video outputs are powered by the latest DCDi by Faroudja FLI-2310 decoding engine. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts (appreciable on high-definition and HD-ready TVs only). An 8 MB memory buffer decreases layer-change pauses or pickup dropouts during DVD playback.
For video connections, choose from a set of wideband, relay-switched component-video outputs, standard composite- and S-video outputs, and either of 2 cutting-edge digital-video outputs: DVI-D (with HDCP, High-Definition Content Protection) and HDMI with selectable 480p/720p/1080i output.
In the audio realm, the player uses Burr-Brown 24-bit, 192 kHz DSD-1791 audio DACs and the Sony CXD-2753 second-generation DSD decoder, which together decode PCM and DSD signals discretely, with no cross-conversion of DSD. The DVD-955S even decodes HDCD (High-Definition Compatible Digital), a 20-bit encoding method used on many commercial CDs to deliver better sound than is possible through standard CD playback.
DVD-Audio discs provide 192 kHz/24-bit multichannel and stereo sound, high storage capacity, and unique bonus materials not available on regular audio CDs. Depending on the disc, Sony's proprietary SACD format provides extended-bandwidth multichannel and/or stereo sound, often presented in a dual-layer format compatible with both standard CD players (at standard resolution) and SACD-equipped players like the DVD-955S (for full-resolution playback).
The player performs its own decoding of both DVD-Audio and SACD signals, passing high-resolution analog, not digital, audio to your integrated amplifier or surround receiver. You'll need an audio/video receiver with multichannel analog-audio inputs to fully appreciate multichannel DVD-A and SACD releases.
If you're not planning to use the DVD-A/SACD capability for multichannel programming, both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can be routed through the player's digital-audio outputs (1 each of RCA coaxial and Toslink optical) for simpler connection with your receiver. The digital-audio outputs are configurable for 24-bit, 96 kHz PCM passthrough to compatible receivers and stand-alone DACs.
Icing on the cake: you also get full digital bass management for both high-res formats to ensure proper sound from your subwoofer no matter what you're listening to. Bass management is also available for all formats via the HDMI output.
What's in the Box DVD player, remote control, remote batteries (2 AA), user's manual, a stereo analog audio interconnect/composite-video cable, and an AC power cord.
Customer Reviews:
A steal at this priceApril 3, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I purchased this product over one year ago because I wanted to utilize the SACD and DVD-Audio play back as I have an extnesive collection of each. I also used the DVD playback on my Sony 36XBR450 TV set via the component conneciton. This TV does not support 720P so everything the DVD was displayed at 480P. The picture was crystal clear and colors were concrete and vibrant, playback was steady. However, as I said I purchased this for it's sound capability and I have not been disappointed. It plays SACD and DVD-Audio with equal clarity, it has bass management for each and extensive setup options. It does take a bit longer to read a disc as a result of these capabilities but it's not a big deal. Suprisingly I have experienced an issue with the playback of a particular CD, the player refuses to read it for some reason. Aside from this it is a very good buy if you are looking for an upconverting DVD player that offers superb audio playback options and excellent picture quality. Rated 4 out of 5 due to the refusal to read perfectly well CD, albeit this only has occurred once.
8/12/08 update, CDs will no longer play on this unit, since the unit employs a double laser reader I assume that the laser for CDs is either misaligned or defective. I purchased an extended replacement warranty however they will not repair the unit only refund. As a result I suggest if you considering one of these in the use market be careful there are a lot reports of this occuring to the 2910/955s.

I have the DVD-2910 and I am returning the DVD-955S, I had them in seperate rooms of course. My player (DVD-955S) has bugs, has a hard time detecting CDs, takes more than 10 secs. to load, sound drops out and any given moment. When it works, it works great, but most of the time, I have to wait on it to work right. I purchased it shipped for less than 302.00, but it is still not worth the pain. My DVD-2910, is far superior, its a good unit vs. bad unit thing! Good luck if you purchase!

First time owning a Denon product. I was excited about this dvd player with so many features and got a great deal on it. When I first took it out of the box,it was heavy and after I hooked it up and popped in a dvd movie. Big disappointment, picture freezes after within 5 minutes. So,I stop and replayed the dvd movie again and it freezes again within 5 minutes. I returned it for a refund. Just ordered the Harman Kardon dvd47. Hope this one is trouble free. Will not recommend this Denon player.
Denon DVD-955S/DVD-2910S universal DVD playerMarch 9, 2007 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I never had a Denon product before. I only knew it was very pricy comparing to other popular brands. However, I got a very good deal for it was getting obsolete. I have a 32" 1080i LCD TV. So DVD-955S is the one for me. When I open the box, I found a very high quality equipment in front of me. The silver metal front panel gave the look of elegance. The touch and feel of the case and buttons was just as great as the look. I especially prefer the silver color with blue lights instead of the black color box. It just looks cool. The manual is for both DVD-955 and DVD-2910. It assures me that DVD-955 and DVD-2910 are the same product under different model names. It is a 20+ lb. heavy solid built DVD player with all the features and functions that I need: it plays SACD, DVD-A, HDCD, VCD, DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, ...; it upconverts VCD and DVD videos to 1080i. The initial setup was easy to me. I just did the fundamental connections and setup. Viola! It started playing immediately. The quality of video enhances the enjoyment of all my movies. The sound of DVD-955S is yet to be reviewed with my high end stereo equipment. But I have confidence that this piece of hardware will not fail me.
