Product Description iMic was the original USB audio adapter that enabled Mac and PC users to add stereo input and output to their USB computers that, otherwise, lacked the necessary hardware support. iMic allows you to connect virtually any microphone or sound input device to your iBook, PowerBook, PowerMac or other Mac or PC systems with a USB port. iMic supports both mic and line level inputs via a selectable switch, as well as a variable level output for connecting speakers or headphones.iMic's audio is superior to most computers' built-in audio because it uses USB for the audio signal. USB isolates the audio signal from the noisy electronics in your computer, giving you higher quality sound when you record, and higher quality sound output for external speakers.iMic shines as the essential tool for converting your old LPs and tapes into MP3s and CDs. Griffin's audio recording software Final Vinyl for Mac OS X (provided for free exclusively to iMic owners) makes recording old records and tapes super easy, with several advanced features such as waveform-based cue editing and built-in 10-band EQ. Final Vinyl can also equalize LPs without having to connect a turntable to a pre-amp. Just hook the turntable directly to the iMic, and Final Vinyl will record your LPs perfectly.iMic, now updated for modern hardware, provides the perfect solution for almost any audio need.
Customer Reviews:
A Little gemNovember 11, 2008 The Griffin IMic 2 works like a charm. It simply does what it is supposed to do. As a bonus, the printed instruction manual includes how to use the item with a couple of the major sound processing applications. It would have been nice if the RCA jack input dongle used for recorded input and possible ground had been integrated into the main unit.
BUZZ.....October 24, 2008 They should have called it iHUM. It BUZZES a 60hz tone throughout every recording. I wanted to transfer my vinyl to MP3 and didn't have high expectations for output quality, but I never even ripped a single file with it because I could never purge the tone. A google search turned up hundreds of hits for imic HUM and all the solutions blamed software, connectors and default settings - but I am here to say - its the device. With the settings corrected and the only the USB dongle attached it still hummed. When I did try to use it, figuring I could remove the BUZZ after I realized that the tone got more intense the longer it played. If you are going to do any kind of archiving or recording I suggest you not be cheap and find something more reputable than this. Its not good for much more than replacing a broken input jack. Maybe.
Why Buy the ImicOctober 23, 2008 I bought this unit for the simple reason that my new laptop does not have a line jack. I bought the laptop to do mobile recording of live music from a mixing board. (Vista apparently doesn't support recording in stereo from a mixer for those interested. Have to go mono.) Anyway, Hp customer service recommended the Imic here at Amazon as a solution to the line in out problem. Hp technical support was available, helpful and nice. However when the Imic arrived there was an annoying buzz in the recording and even in Itunes. Several calls to the Griffin techs, who by the way were also excellent, especially since they didn't sell me the unit, resulted in my purchasing a Radio Shack Ground Loop Isolator. The Imic and ground loop isolator fixed the problem. My guess is if you are planning to record from a mixer with a laptop and no line jack, you might as well plan on an Imic and ground loop isolator. There are several brands here at Amazon that might work but I wanted to get this thing working and Radio Shack is right down the street from me. Long story short, I don't know or care about recording from tape or vinyl but if you want to record live sound, learn from my struggles. The solution wasn't that hard or that expensive, it just took too much down time and too many tech calls to make it happen. I still rate the product 5 stars because it did do what I needed and Griffin tech support was really first rate.
Great replacement for a broken integrated sound card.October 6, 2008 One day, the sound stopped working on my iMac. I took the comp. back to the Apple store, and they said that it was a hardware issue and that I wasn't under warranty. The guys at the Genius Bar reccommended this product. They said that they used to sell it there, but no longer do and suggested that I get it online. I did, and it works as expected, with no need to install anything. I believe there are some cheaper alternatives, but I'm happy with this quality one.

Works as advertising and lets me cue music from djay software while music is playing. I only use it for this feature. Have not used the mic in.
