I would not purchase it again, but now that I have I'll enjoy it.December 4, 2008 If only the ddx-5120 -
1. Had six channels to run four speakers and a sub... As it is I had to split the front and rear off one channel, which means no front/rear balance control. 2. I got the headunit optional box that is supposed to be compatible with the xm/sirius tuners (plug and play) so you can control the sat. radio thru the headunit. My installer opened two dif. new boxes, swapped out wires, etc. to conclude this headunit software doesn't work with the tuners... yet. perhaps a software update. 3. the bluetooth didn't sound like you were talking out of a metal trash can. Absolutely wonderful, otherwise. 4. The zones on the audio control didn't lockup (ie. become unchangable) after you set them... requring a hard reset. 5. It came with built-in nav... yes I know this unit does not have it and those purchasing it should know better. I made a mistake thinking I wouldn't add it and then did for more than if I purchased the dnx-5210. However, that unit has even less channel output options so I guess I'm glad I stuck with this one. 6. Updating the software was simpler(ver. 1.5 now available at this time, whereas mine just out of the box 2 weeks ago has 1.4). I download, burn a disc, insert, and all I get is "software update" on screen. Looks right, but fails to install new version. 7. There is not some easy way to shut the screen off when driving at night, or at least dim it. If you dim it, you better remember to undim it before daylight or you'll have a very dif. time seeing the button to undim it the next day. I have yet to find out if I can turn it off completely at night, as others allow. Perhaps someone can tell me how to do that... Very annoying. 8. That the nav system doesn't come with the latest Garmin software, and the update is neither easy to install nor free from Garmin.
I will not suffer as the ddx-5120 has great sound, and great interfaces with bluetooth, navigation, ipod, (not yet sat. radio, however). It simplifies driving in a really nice way... no fumbling around to get the phone, change tunes on the ipod, or nav system. Sound cuts out/pauses where you are when the blue/nav system need to tell you something... no pushing pause to hear a call or directions. Really nice, plus I love the volume knob. My last headunit had push buttons for volume control, which I will never get again... That's why I stayed away from the DDX-7 series. You need a pencil eraser to control the buttons, if you can find them at night! Perhaps the other units out there (Pioneer, Alpine) are just as flawed as this or worse... I, however, would try them now that I found all the drawbacks with this one. But, seeing how I've invest a ridiculous amount in this system, I intend to live with and be happy for years to come. The sound, even from the built-in tuner (which I used before adding an Alpine PDX amp) is wonderful! Good luck.

I really like the Garmin GPS. Otherwise, the user interface leaves a bit to be desired. It will do most anything, but I often need to consult the manual. Overall, I am pleased.
Best Kenwood deck ever!October 6, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This deck was the best decision to buy that I've ever made. It looks great and is very easy to use. The only thing that I will suggest if you decide to buy this deck and want to watch dvds is to get the remote with it, I didn't and I still haven't but I think it will be worth it and I think its only $30. Also IMPORTANT... haha this pissed me off really bad. After you install the deck you come up to the screen with all the options (ex. tuner, dvd, ipod, etc.) you need to go to tuner... there you will hear the radio, obviously, if you installed it properly. Well it did not give me a notice that in order to get sound on the other things like ipod and dvd/cd you need to turn a button on. So you have to go into the tuner and press the "TI" button (have it highlighted red) and then go into ipod and what not and it will work perfect. It will save alot of time, confusion, and frustration. Other than that this was a fantastic purchase, would recommend this deck to anyone.
Great radio do not believe what others are saying probably from pioneerJune 27, 2008 This is actually the best head unit for the money and has all the features everyones claims without. Update it and the nav. but first learn how to use it and all its features before speaking because if you really want to talk about this stereo own it and know how to use it. If something doesn't work, i'll prove you wrong. The only thing that this doesn't have is voice prompting with exception to the bluetooth feature. All for around $600 stop complaining
really like it but...June 10, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I bought the dnx5120 on Saturday at Best Buy for $850, and they installed it and the ipod adaptor for about $230 (I wouldn't even know where to begin to install myself - like, how do you get behind the stereo?). Anyway, I have a Mazda Protege5, and a big FYI, the Best Buy website said the 5120 would NOT fit in my car, but the Best Buy installer told me he could make it work, and he was right, it fits perfectly!
I mainly bought it for the navigation. I wanted a permanent nav system with a little larger screen than all the portables I was looking at. I'm happy withe the Garmin system!
The rest of the UI seems a bit quirky, but it's manageable once I programmed my 3 favorite stations. I just wish it had a few more hard buttons for the stereo controls.
My iPod does NOT connect properly - I have a 4th generation ipod classic (20 gigs, monochrome screen). It plugs in and plays music from the ipod to the car stereo, but I have to control it all on the iPod, not the stereo interface - in fact, the stereo interface says "disonnected." This isn't a deal breaker for me because at least I can still connect the iPod without those awful transmitters, but I sure wish it would work as advertised.
Next to myiPod not connecting properly, my other disappointment was that the navigation system does not have any Traffic Update options - when the packaging said "optional" I thought that meant, I could opt to buy a subscription, but it doesn't, apparently it means you can opt to buy a Receiver and pay more to install it and pay even more to subscribe :(
I contacted Garmin and Kenwood, and learned that the only traffic receiver that is compatible is the GTM-10 receiver for the TMC traffic service. The XM and MSN Direct traffic services are not compatible with the DNX5120.
I ordered the KCA BT200 bluetooth adapter and the GTM 10 Traffic Receiver, and I'll edit this review once I get them installed.
Overall, I love the big nice screen and navigation, and the stereo is a nice upgrade from my factory model. Even though my ipod doesn't connect right, I'm still happy to be able to plug it in anyway. I highly recommend this if you're like me and don't like the portable nav systems hanging on your dashboard tempting thieves.
