FlawedJanuary 5, 2009 The remote works fine and feels fine, however it's best feature is sorely flawed... it's not nearly bright enough!!
What's the point of making a lighted remote (called a Glo I might add), if you're not going to make it really bright and really readable??
Love Tivo but disappointed in this product.
A Tivo remote and it glows! Cool.December 21, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Ok, so it is over priced a bit but it is a Tivo remote, can learn your TV codes if you don't have your other remotes anymore, and it glows in the dark.
And, if your existing Tivo remote were to ever fail you would be without TiVo...so order now !!
Great little remoteDecember 21, 2008 Everything TiVo does, it does well. This remote is no exception. The glow makes it easier to see the buttons in a dark room. The shape is just right in your hand. The buttons are nice and easy to find.
My one nitpick is that the TV input button is close the power button. I know it's silly, but sometimes I press buttons without looking because I know where they're placed on the remote, and sometimes I miss and accidentally turn off the TV. The power button is marked well, but I still make this mistake, and I wish they would move that button to somewhere else on the remote. Another little nitpick is that I wish there were a button that took you quickly back to the start of a program. But all in all, this is an awesome remote, and TiVo is an awesome product. I can't recommend it enough.
Works wellDecember 12, 2008 I bought the Glo remote when I installed a new A/V receiver (Onkyo TSXR705) to use with my TiVo HD because I wanted to be able to control the A/V on/off and volume with one remote. I expected to re-program one button to do the job, and it worked as advertised.
But even better, this remote allows you to program multiple commands on one button. Once I learned this [...], I was able to program the Glo remote's Power button to power-on both my Sharp LCD, and the Onkyo with a single press. The Sharp LCD was able to power-off (stand-by) the Onkyo through HDMI-CEC, so it's a perfect solution for me. So perfect, in fact, that I bought another Glo remote to replace the Logitech Harmony I had been using. Now both my wife, and I have our own remotes.
Pros: It's a dedicated TiVo remote, and you can reprogram certain buttons to mimic those on another remote. Works great to control TV, TiVo, and A/V in concert. The backlit keys are nice. The keys have a nice, solid, almost clicky feel. Much better than the mushy keys on the standard remote.
Cons: OK, nits, mostly. After years of getting used to the standard TiVo "peanut" remote, having the Select button in the center of the navigation "ring" takes some getting used-to. Switching to watching a DVD still forces a change in remotes. That's probably not a defect with this remote, it's just a little annoying. Fortunately, we don't watch DVD's very often.
Superior usability overall, but thumbs down on the thumbsOctober 18, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
If you are using any other Tivo remote, you owe it to yourself to get one of these. Tired of fumbling with your old Tivo remote's soft spongy buttons that don't seem to quite do the job even when you are super careful to press the buttons firmly? I thought so. (And if your remote's buttons haven't developed that spongy feeling yet, just wait. It will.) This remote beats the old ones hands down. When you press a button there is a tactile click to let you know that contact has been made. The remote feels great in the hand, although not substantially different from the older models except for a texture on the bottom of the remote that lets you know which end you've got ahold of. This is a great feature. The backlight is great too.
There are a couple of issues with this model however. First of all, they switched the position of the "Thumbs" and volume/channel buttons, which was a pretty dumb idea. Volume and Channel were much better positioned on the old remote, just above the pause & play buttons. They are still within reach on this newer model, but this seems like a pointless change. The intent was to make the thumbs up/down easier to get to, but honestly, once you've had a Tivo for a couple of months, how often do you really use the thumbs?
The other nit with this device is that it uses 4 AAA batteries instead of 2 AA's like the older model. Not such a big deal in and of itself, but battery life seems considerably shorter. Not that you'll be running out for batteries every month or anything. I'd say they last at least 6 months for a heavily used unit. (When the remote starts responding intermittently, change the batteries). But compared to the older remotes that could go years on a set of AA's, the new model is a step backward, albeit just a little one.
Despite its faults, this is still a great remote. It works perfectly with older TIVO models. I have not tested on the Series 1, but the Series 2 remote works with the Series 1 and these work fine with Series 2, so if you still have a Series 1, you're probably in good shape. This remote also works perfectly with the Humax and Toshiba DVD burner Tivo's.
