2 out of 5 stars Works for some but, not for me   January 9, 2009
Maybe this Aluratek WiFi radio happens to be compatible with your wireless router. Maybe you're only interested in specific stations and, maybe this radio happens to receive those stations. If all three are true in your case, this may be the perfect WiFi radio for your needs.

Given the favorable reviews and enjoying the prospect of spending $130 instead of $260, I ordered this unit with great expectations. After living with it for one week, it's clear many of the negative reviews had some valid points about this disappointing clock radio.

Pros:
- Space-saving design.
- User-friendly remote control. A proper remote can be operated in the dark. Unlike those cheap credit-card remotes having 28 identical membrane buttons laid out in a 4x7 matrix (virtually impossible to use by feel), this one is great.
- Very good sound quality. The single, space-saving speaker was designed to pack good sound in a small space. If that's not enough, it has a stereo headphone jack and RCA outputs.
- Tech support consistently responds within 24 hours.

Cons:
- "Failed to Lookup DNS" error. After successfully connecting and getting an IP address on my Netgear MR814v2 wireless network with 128-bit WEP security--I don't know; maybe it prefers 802.11g and/or WPA?--it consistently displays that error message; others have reported the same problem. Although stringing an ethernet cable through the basement was a workaround, I was expecting to be able to easily move it to another room. But, even if the wireless connection worked, this unit is being returned because of the other issues.
- Outdated or unverified stations list. Of the hundreds of stations in its menus, 75%-85% of them I tried--including all Clear Channel Communications stations--fail to connect. Maybe this is the fault of its vTuner software. My wireless laptop plays them all but, not when using the vTuner site. Aluratek tech support basically ignored this issue and focused only on the wireless DNS error. Regardless, it's a fatal flaw and this disappointing radio is going back to Amazon.
- No search capability whatsoever. Unlike the Logitech Squeezebox Boom which uses Reciva, not vTuner, and can tune a station when you enter its call letters, this Aluratek makes you navigate through its genres or locations or favorite stations menus every time. (And, if it's a Clear Channel station, forget it.)
- Backlight: Even if everything worked as designed, the backlight is ridiculous. Fifteen-dollar clock radios have had dimmable backlights (manual or automatic) for decades. This one is either on (and excessively bright) or off. Of course, when it's off, the clock is invisible.
- It needs an auto volume leveling option. Software media players have had this feature for many years. This seems to have been designed by people having minimal if any Internet radio listening experience.
- When Aluratek tech support quickly runs out of ideas, they respond with the same ideas over and over.

In my opinion, this technology--clearly, Aluratek's implementation of it--is not ready for prime time. I refuse to pay for the privilege of beta testing this half-baked prototype. Meanwhile, I've decided to continue using a laptop to listen to Internet radio until someone gets the WiFi clock radio thing right for under $150. (And a freeware app named "TOff" will serve as my sleep timer.)

5 out of 5 stars Love it! Love it! Love it!   January 6, 2009
When the Smooth Jazz station in my area went off the air, I thought about getting a subscription to satellite radio but figured that there should be a device that allowed me to listen to the radio - away from my computer - over the internet via the internet subscription I already have. Enter the Aluratek AIRMM01 Internet Radio. It does everything I want: streams thousands of smooth jazz stations from around the world (I listened to a station in Belgium last night!) to my bedroom, picks up my local FM stations, displays the time and has a sleep timer. (The media service streaming & MP3 player are icing on the cake for me) It's fabulous.

BE SURE TO DOWNLOAD & INSTALL THE FIRMWARE UPDATE. Once you do the unit automatically detects the wireless networks available; pick yours, enter your security key if necessary and you're good to go. The sound is decent, better than your average clock radio, but it's not Bose. It's a nice size - doesn't take up too much space on your dresser or night stand. The display is quite bright, not good for sleeping; I turn it off at bedtime since I like my room dark. I'm seriously considering a 2nd unit for the kitchen. I've been using it about a week and I consider it money well spent.

5 out of 5 stars Making the Most of the Aluratek Internet Radio   December 31, 2008

Here is the way to get the best use of the Aluratek Internet Radio:

1.Download the latest firmware from here and install it:
http://www.aluratek.com/download_drivers_manuals.php
2.Now you can add stations not otherwise available. Here is how:
http://helpdesk.aluratek.com/index.php?
pid=knowledgebase#display_entry,true,29
Windows Media player then lets you find the URL of most stations via a pls file.
(but not radio365, which does not provide URL access from internet radios )
3.Set up via the Aluretek manual to stream MP3s from your computer. If you need to convert CDs to MP3s, iTunes makes it easy.

Now you have access to most internet radio and your own music, too.

Not only that, but anyone can access all this easily.

What a super product!!

5 out of 5 stars Working better than the Sangean Wifi Radio   December 29, 2008
After purchasing a Sangean WFR-1 radio for a friend of mine, I can definitely say that this little wonder has provided excellent audio quality and interaction when connecting to my Wifi router was quicker than the one for the Sangean; sound quality is perhaps a bit better since the Aluratek sound is a bit crispier. Price also is great. I read some reviews complaining about the light being too bright. The model I have here has an option that shuts the light off while the system is still working. Remote control is very user friendly. We are now thinking about asking Santa for a 2nd unit in 2009. Cheers!

5 out of 5 stars This thing is awesome!   December 29, 2008
It takes under 5 minutes to set up... no joke. Lots of great stations. The remote is a little wonky and takes a bit (few minutes?) to get used to. It even knows what time it is right off the bat and everything... literally NO set up!!
