Be your own judgeNovember 14, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have had this television set since June 2008. I had 90 days to return it to Costco and get all of my money back. Costco is down the street from my house. For 75 of those 90 days I swore I was taking it back.
Somewhere between day 75 and day 90 I realized this is a freakin' awesome TV. Once I got over the "I must only buy brand name TVs that electronic geeks think are best for me" insecurities, I was able to fall in love with the picture quality on this set and enjoy it more each day.
Every brand will have quirks. If the features on this Westinghouse suit your needs, don't hesitate because you think the lower price will mean substandard picture quality.
Absolutely nothing wrong with this TV.
The absolutely BEST TV for the price and size!!August 22, 2008 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
My son got this TV for christmas because he's 6 and every 6 yr old MUST have a flat screen right? lol. Well, we got it on sale and for a fantastic deal and it has the most unbelieavble crisp, clear picture that I've seen. I own a Sony and it beats the picture on that one by a long shot! It is very light, we chose to sit it on his dresser instead of mounting it on the wall. Gone are the days of lifting the backbreaking 400 # TV's!!! It has the plug in's in the front so it was very easy for us to hook up the Xbox 360 and the Wii to the tv...and gaming is incredible on that tv. it is like you are actually THERE. So naturally, even though we have 5 tv's in the house,we often gather in his room to watch movies and play video games...Again it is so light, very user friendly, has the sleep function which I love, and you cannot beat the picture. We reasearched and looked at several tv's before purchasing this one. It was the best price for the size and quality. I highly recommend this tv!
Best price for a 52 inch HDTV (Unfortunately not from Amazon)July 27, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
We bought this TV a month ago.The off the air HD reception is good(15 local channels with a home made attic antenna). The Picture quality is excellent and clear. However, there seems to have a issue when hooking up the DirectTV box with S-Video port. Sometimes when we try to switch from the off the air HD TV to DirectTV(S-Video), it keep saying 'no input detected'. We don't know it's the TV problem or the DirectTV box problem. Like the other post, we also notice the white blink lines at the top screen in STD mode . Switching to full or other mode will take care this problem. Beside these 2 minor problems, we are totally happy with this TV set.
The Sweetest spot for us is to buy this set from Costco at $999.99( with tax is a little over 1k). Where can you get a 52" 1080P HDTV with 4 HDMI and 2 years warranty from Costco for such a low price ?
PS: We do not work for Costco
It's the Toyota Corolla of big LCD HDTVs (excellent reliable quality)July 20, 2008 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I was hesitant to venture away from the big Sony, Toshiba, Sharp, Samsung, and LG brands. But professional reviews from PC Magazine and UltimateAV.com highly recommended this TV for excellent contrast, color, and brightness so I took a "risk."
Ends up that it wasn't that much of a risk. Apparently Westinghouse is the largest maker of LCDs under 32" and has been pushing really hard to become one of the big players for large HDTVs (I read somewhere that they are the fourth largest LCD maker overall in the US). Whereas other big name manufacturers experiment with different feature combinations in their various 52" panels to maximize money out of consumers (think BMW and their various "series"), Westinghouse focused on getting the major features right for a great price and create happy customers.
I really like the picture quality. Very crisp 1080p with exceptional contrast. Basically no need to adjust color as it's nearly perfect out of the box (just about every other HDTV needs professional calibration). Extremely bright even when surrounded by four windows. No issue with screen glare from overhead lighting. No ghosting issues that I can see. Instant on when energy saver mode is off.
I would have liked to see 120 hz processing although that is still a mostly unproven technology from my understanding (I can't really tell the difference at my local big box retailer) and HDMI 1.3 (this one is 1.2a) w/Lip Synch. All this can be had from the big names for about [...]...way more than the ~[...] I paid for this unit.
Can't beat it for the price.July 2, 2008 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
The packaging was adequate. No frills , but thats how I like it. Cut costs where it doesn't hurt.
Weight, Heavy but manageable. Me and a little creativity put on top of my mantle.
Bezel and overall appearance are great. The Bezel trim is glossy but not mirror glossy like my Vizio.
Setup was simple.
Menu is very intuitive and easy to navigate. The remote is also no frills , I like this too. However it is very light and one of the most comfortable I have held in a long time. Very easy to operate without looking.
Picture quality is far better than the westies I am used to seeing in the retail locations. Not gray at all. The night before I watched Spider Man 3 via Blu ray on my friends 52" Sony Bravia. Last night I played the exact same movie and used the same player. I, nor my wife could tell a difference. Maybe side by side there " may" have been a difference but nothing we either noticed. I surely saw no $1200 difference!
The spine/ waterfall design came in very handy as I hooked up various connections. I still have not tried my HTPC.
When displaying OTA content natively there is a row or two of pixels of "snow". I beleive others have posted about this. However at my distance "FILL" and "OVERSCAN" do just fine.
