PRS700January 5, 2009 Jusy love this new updated sony ebook reader. Would be nice if you could read while it is connected to computer by usb cable. Also, a car charger would be nice addition for long trips. Exceptionally easy to download books to read.
Very Happy ReaderJanuary 5, 2009 I had been looking at these, but was too conservative to take the plunge. I had already settled on Sony's Reader over the Kindle but was hesitant to shell out the cash. My wife surprised me for Christmas and I am so glad she did.
One thing I was nervous about was the readability. I had read some reviews about the glare of the screen as well as the contrast of the gray background. The glare is noticeable at first, but with a slight adjustment it becomes a non-issue. Once I begin reading I don't notice it at all. The gray-black contrast is also no problem as long as the lighting is adequate, but that would go for any book. This is also helped by the built-in lighting, very convenient.
As soon as I started reading the device began to disappear, just like a good book. I found myself at first reaching up to turn the page, forgetting to swipe or press the page turn button instead. The touch screen and the buttons are very easy to use, easy to learn.
I have a large collection of classic literature already in pdf format and I was anxious to see how it would work on my Reader. It works great and it is so much more readable than on the computer. The only pdf documents I have had trouble with are those with charts or a lot of formatting, like double columns or brochures. For most pdf documents, however, the resizing works great and I am very happy.
The accompanying software is basic, but easy to use. It is easy to create collections to organize your reading any way you want. It is very simple to import my own documents into the Reader as well.
Sony's design is very attractive. I know external design is a secondary issue, but this really is a good looking device. The weight and size feel very comfortable. The cover is secure and smart.
Misleading -- SONY Customer Service HUNG UP ON ME!!!December 30, 2008 2 out of 5 found this review helpful
First off -- this may or may not work to your expectations but if you are a Mac user FORGET IT! You're screwed! What product in this day and age is not Mac compatible???? Well, the SONY Reader isn't. Worse, I ordered this from their website -- nowhere does it warn Mac users about incompatibility issues -- as a gift. Even worse yet, I had it engraved.
SO ... Christmas morning when my husband unwraps his gift, well you can see where this is going. Since I had it engraved SONY policy is no refund. I got that jewel of information from the SONY customer service agent, George, right before HE HUNG UP ON ME.
SHAME ON YOU SONY ..;.

Sony PRS-700BC Reader Digital Book
I give this product 1 star because I cant give it any less.
This product was given to me for christmas, I uploaded some ebooks, it taes any PDF file however in many cases the fonts are so small you cant possibly read them, when you zoom in they get blury.... Also the books at the sony store are average 60% more expensive than the Kindle books on Amazon. The Sony software is flawed, the books that are imported come up with names that are not the actual file name, the library software is not complete, you cant organize books chronologicaly, and when you have many books it gets difficult to find them.
Sony has no possible support for this product, I spent two days calling and on the phone trying to solve some of these software problems, however they knew less about the product than I did in a few days of using it.
Sony has to work on this product further to make it a good well worth $400 ebook reader. The size and look are great. however the in this case the negative aspects were far more than the positive. I returned this product and purchased the Kindle.....
OK, but not worth the priceDecember 26, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Today I received a PRS700 for Christmas. It came as a surprise, as I read a lot, but not very many books. Still, as I have used my girlfriends Kindle I figured it would be nice to have. However, within an hour of trying it I put it back into the box to be returned. As with many things, there were some good and bad points. First the good. Page turns were noticeably quick compared to my experiences with the Kindle. I also like the clean layout that allowed you to hold it like a book without fear of accidently whacking a button. It had a nice sturdy feel and was of a good size (both screen and reader). The touch interface was intuitive and nice. Finally I liked the lighting on it. They are side mounted and come with two brightness settings. This is the one thing I was surprised the Kindle didn't have, in fact they touted it. But, like many people I would imagine, I do often read either in bed or in low light were it would be nice to have something extra to make reading easier. The lights are side mounted, which kind of suck in that the sides of the pages are bright and the center is not so much. I think that this is necessary because of the reflective nature of the eInk technology that wouldn't allow for a backlight. Lastly, I was happy to see Sony include SD card support in addition to their proprietary memory card format. Now the bad. I am a Mac user and I noticed right on the box, no Mac support. I figured this was one of those things where it's not officially supported, but one could make it work well enough. This turned out to not be so. I figured it works on USB and supports PDF so all I would have to do is drag a PDF to an SD card or transfer it via USB and I would be happily reading away. Not so. Near as I can tell from the quick start guide you MUST use the Sony software. Even if you are transferring a book or PDF from the SD card, you have to use the software to put it back onto the SD card so the reader will see it. Lame... I use Boot Camp infrequently, but thought I would give a try before giving up. I tried 4 times to get the software to load up so I could get a PDF imported to try out. Each time it locked up and crashed after a minute or so without even allowing me to do anything first. This was bad enough, but as I opened it up and sat it side by side with my girlfriends Kindle it became obvious that the Kindle screen was sooo much better. The contrast and crispness on the Kindle was paper-like. With the Sony, it was almost like viewing a book that was mounted in a deep picture frame with glass that had some funky coating on it. The text seemed kind of washed out and fuzzy compared to the Kindle. The glare was also pretty bad, I could only imagine how terrible it would be outside. The Kindle has it's fair share of warts, but I would gladly take it over this ereader any day. With the Plastic Logic reader seemingly pushed back until 2010, I think I'll be waiting for the next iteration of the Kindle. I hope the rumors hold up about it coming out soon... If it was $200 I could see trying to make do with the problems, but for a premium price I find it a less than premium product for someone like myself.
