Piece of junk - hardware and softwareDecember 27, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
(btw - this is using the most recent version of the 4.0 Neatworks software).
There is no way of disabling the ANNOYING system notification process (Neat Works has finished processing yadda....) IT"S 2008!!!!!
Using the Neat Desk scanner: You must hold/guide certain receipts, that are not the exact width of one of the feeder, to make sure it goes through straight, or it will scan at a crooked angle, and you cannot fix with the software. (You can only rotate in 90 degree increments.)
Which means you can forget scanning multiple receipts... (which also means you get the annoying system notification message every time...)
You cannot edit receipt images (especially cropping) once you have filed it. (You must delete and re-scan. Hopefully you kept the receipt...)
Does not remember (or have) default sort orders. You may set your receipts to sort by date (descending) and then by vendor, but if you split a transaction it goes away and you have to redefine it again.
Cannot split transactions duing review & filing process. Very problematic when scanning in multiple receipts as you have to note each one and where it is filed so you can go find and THEN split.
Cannot enter negative amounts when splitting. (required if you return/exchange something from 1 folder but purchased other things from other folders.) You have to generate a 'fake' 0 amont split and then enter negative numbers in that one.
BUT, you must be careful as there is NO way (NONE) to audit split receipts. There is no view, report or anything to show all splits for 1 particular receipt to make sure totlas were correct. (or even to audit sometime down the road.)
When working with split transactions you will need an EXTERNAL calculator (or spreadsheet) to calculate amounts - especially tax amounts as the software does not provide a calculator - or ways of enetering the tax amounts (while splitting - you can afterwards - just not during...)
All reports are designed for business purporses (all based on spending) and there are no reports for personal use - AND - there is no way to design or run reports other than the few that are built in. No way to audit folders or receipts, etc. For instance: a report showing all receipts by folder, or all recipts by date, etc.
I cannot even run a report without the software locking up and having to use task manager to end app. And then when I restart I LOSE ALL DATA FROM THE LAST TIME ENTERED. (Which just happened - and I lost 1.5 hours of work entering2 (yes TWO) receipts.
And, of course, their website has no place for customer feedback... (at least publicly...)
Neat and NiftyDecember 16, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
EZ to install. Very reliable and allows for good organization. Since I use Pdf files this system is very compatable with allowing me to save documesnts in client folders. It does take some time to create the documents, but I think this may have more to do with my computers precessing speed than the scanning device. I was spending a lot of time trying to make the all in one device work. It was very slow and unreliable. This is much better.
CAREFULL!!!December 15, 2008 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
TERRIBLE SOFTWARE! At first I thought this was going to be great. It scans in reciepts nice and it recognizes about half the needed information with the rest being keyed in manually. It worked well enough to be a productivity boost until you find out there is essentially not a good way to get images/info out of the software. Only option is to output one receipt at a time and enter a file name for each one or have all receipts packed into one large useless file. Not to mention the install of SQL server causes Windows update to hang and periodically so does the software. BACK UP OFTEN!
Buggy SoftwareDecember 12, 2008 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
The software is so buggy that I couldn't even open it. I called the Neat Company's tech support several times. The support reps tried to help but to no avail. I will pass up this scanner until the Neat Company irons out the kinks in the software.
Amazing Organization ToolNovember 4, 2008 20 out of 20 found this review helpful
I went to the store looking for the Neat Receipts scanner, and I came across this new product. I could not be more happy for buying it! I had 4 years worth of credit card and bank statements piled up in boxes, and with this scanner system I was able to scan them and organize them on my computer in less than a day (I'm talking hundreds of pages).
I have absolutely no complaints on this (other than the price, which is high, but it is a new product and it will come down).
The scanner can read 2 sided documents and scan both sides, in color! And it does it fast.
It also reads receipts and business cards and extracts the information from them (such as what store the receipt is from, how much total was, how much tax was, date of transaction, etc...) The best part about this feature is that it lets you edit the information (sometimes necessary if the receipt was very worn or wrinkled.
The software is extremely easy to use and very powerful. A great feature about the scanner/software is that you can load a bunch of pages and start scanning them. While they scan you can work on filing other documents. Once the pages are scanned they go into a sort of "inbox" where they wait for you to look at them and decide where to file them.
The two sided, color scanning is great and very fast. Another convenient feature the program has is the ability to combine several pages into one document. All you do is click on the different pages while holding down control and click combine ... and you have one file for a multi page document!
All the files you scan into the program are searchable, so you can enter a search term and it will bring up all the documents (or receipts or business cards, depending on which section you are searching in). Very handy to search back on when you bought something...
Another great feature for those that do not receive paper statements is the pdf import feature! If you get your statements from online, you can still import the file into the program (as if you had scanned it in yourself) and have the searchable capabilites of the other files.
Keep in mind, this is probably not a good scanner to scan pictures with, but for a document scanner, it is fast, and very good. I just hope it lasts the wear and tear I'm subjecting it to right now. I am very thankful that this product has helped me get rid of all of my paper clutter!!!
