Product Description
The Onkyo TX-SR606 7.1-Channel Home Theater Receiver provides high-definition video and audio processing for four source components. Onkyo's RIHD (Remote Interactive over HDMI) gives you inter-operability with the displays and playback components from other leading brands. With an expanded version of Audyssey's room correction technology, the TX-SR606 maintains the fullness of surround sound audio quality at low volume levels. With the latest HDMI version and advanced A/V processing capabilities, the TX-SR606 is a powerful control center for all high-definition media, including Blu-ray Disc and HD broadcasts. The TX-SR606 has Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio to enable a lossless, bit-for-bit soundtrack that is identical to that of the studio master. Both codecs are designed for the Blu-ray Disc format. Dolby Digital Plus has been designed for high-definition video delivered via disc media, broadcasts and online content. DTS-HD High Resolution Audio, meanwhile, offers a greater bit rate, a higher sampling rate, and more channels than the core DTS technology. The TX-SR606's HDMI inputs can receive pristine digital video from HDMI-enabled components for a single-cable output to a display device with an HDMI or DVI connection. 4 out of 5 stars Great Product For A Great Price   December 2, 2008
This Onkyo is a great value! It is powerful (90 watts per channel), clear, and full of the latest features, including:

7.1 decoding for ALL surround sound codecs
Auto Calibration w/ included microphone(easy AND accurate)
4 HDMI inputs and 2 component inputs for 6 total HD hook-ups
HDMI repeater, so the signal does not degrade and cause video drop-outs
Easy to use universal remote

I have had it for a month and I love it. It replaced a 6.1 Denon. I would say the sound is very comparable, but this has WAY more features and costs less! I use it for movies (DVD, Blu Ray, HD-DVD) and gaming (Wii, XBOX 360, PS3)and they all sound awesome. I love the lossless sound (DTS HD MA and Dolby TrueHD). A must buy (I paid $348).

4 out of 5 stars Very good, with one small exception...   December 2, 2008
All-in-all, the receiver met my expectations. The setup is straight forward, though the techniques to re-establish the speaker settings is hidden somewhere in the deep, dark bowels of the manual (first time's a snap). The sound is great and even the FM reception, using the supplied wire antennae, worked well.

My complaint is how one configures the second set of speakers. The good news is that the "B" speakers can be set to a different source than the "A" speakers. This is kind of neat if you want one audio source in one room (say where you're watching TV) and another elsewhere (say, listening to FM). The complaint is that the "B" set can only be driven by analog input. So if you're watching TV in one room (via HDMI, for example) and want to catch the sound elsewhere (say, on your deck while you're flipping burgers), you're out of luck. I couldn't say how many would be affected by this, but I was. And I went to lengths to find a receiver that could support multiple speakers so this was a bit disappointing.

The only other negative I can think of is the remote's ability to control other devices, specifically my Scientific Atlanta HD/DVR cable box. Most things work as expected, with the one exception being the inability to bring up the list of recorded shows. The cable's remote has a dedicated "My DVR" button to do this and there doesn't seem to be a way to persuade the Onkyo's remote to do likewise. Otherwise, the remote seems to support the typical cable, DVR, and DVD buttons (including the cables, A, B, C, and D buttons).

If these nuances aren't important to you, go ahead. I bought the receiver on Amazon for about $100 less than in typical retail stores.

4 out of 5 stars no problems   December 2, 2008
I went for surround sound simply to get decent sound for dialogue. I am happy with the upgrade, I enjoy the quality of the sound more than I expected.

2 out of 5 stars A frustrating experiance   December 1, 2008
I have a CTR HDTV that supports component not HDMI. I ordered a Onkyo 606 and hooked it up via component cables. The picture form the DVD player was solid; however, the picture from my directv satellite HR 20 box would show black lines at random and flutter. I called Onkyo and they said try different component cables which I did and there was no difference. I then ordered another 606 and it did the same thing. Finally, I wised up and ran a component cable directly from the satellite box to the TV and my problem went away. I am going to try a Denon avr 888 next as it is in my price range ($350) but I don't like that the latest audio codexs are not supported. Hopefully the Denon will not have video problems.

4 out of 5 stars Great features for little $$$   November 30, 2008
Bought this reciever for my mom, so ease of use and feature set are key. Main reason I bought this over the TX-SR506 is the upscaling of analogue inputs for output over HDMI (obviously). Scaling performance was decent; I've seen scalers perform better, but I've also seen much worse. I was dissapointed that the unit did not properly deinterlace 480i material though. Granted this isn't really an issue from a DVD as most everyone has a 480p DVD player and if they don't, a very good upscaling player is only $90. Other than that, super handy that only 1 cable is required from unit to TV for all input sources, IMHO well worth the extra cash if even if it doesn't deinterlace your standard def. TV source properly. Not to mention that it's Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master Audio ready, that's a big bonus. On Screen Display is nice too. Can't comment on sound quality as I haven't spent much time with it, but Onkyo is going to be a decent sounding reciever no question. Only reason I rated it 4 stars out of 5 is the deinterlacing issue. Killer bang for the buck.
